Costume repairs, batteries, visibility, weather, candy logistics, and the sentence: “Dad, it broke.”
The short answer
PACK THE FIVE-MINUTE FIX.
Most Halloween emergencies are small: a loose strap, dead battery, uncomfortable shoe, missing flashlight, or route nobody actually discussed.
Handle those before sunset. Follow costume and product safety instructions, supervise sharp tools, and use lights or reflective elements where drivers can see them.

Build the repair pouch
Pack fabric tape, safety pins, a small sewing kit, bandages, hair ties, and a few zip-top bags. Adults handle the sharp stuff.
Test every battery
Flashlights, light-up costumes, doorbell cameras, and the phone you will use for photos should be checked before sunset.
Make the costume visible
Add a clip light, reflective band, or bright layer that works with the costume. Being seen matters more than perfect accuracy.
Check shoes and weather
A costume that works indoors may not survive wet sidewalks, cold air, or a long walk. Comfortable shoes are part of the plan.
Choose the route
Decide the streets, meeting point, bathroom option, and turnaround time before everyone is excited and already outside.
Do the candy check
Follow your family’s allergy and age rules, inspect the haul at home, and keep pet-dangerous candy out of reach.

Take the picture before the costume is tired, the candy is open, and everyone has different opinions about walking.

Collect flashlights, jackets, phones, and costume pieces before they spread across the house.

Save reusable pieces together and move out what will not be worn again.
- 04Restock the repair pouch
Replace the tape, pins, and bandages while you still remember what disappeared.
